What you don’t do leads to your biggest regrets.
Isn’t that interesting? It isn’t the mistakes we make that stay with us, it’s the lost opportunities that haunt us. What do you regret not doing in 2017?
-Maybe you wanted to check out that hip new restaurant but felt bad paying $100 for dinner?
-Maybe you wanted to start reading more books but never made time?
-Maybe you wanted to finally build an online business you love but were afraid so you played it safe instead?
This type of regret stems from one thing…fear. We don’t act because we fear an unknown outcome. We have this voice in our head that is constantly telling us bad things like,
‘You’ll look stupid if you get it wrong.’
‘You’ve never been good at that kind of thing anyway.’
‘No one will trust you.’
‘You’ll never make any money.’
Thankfully there is a simple way to turn off this voice and become the best in any field. If you are tired of missing out, on not acting because you are worried about getting it wrong, and finally ready to take the leap here’s how you can become the best.
The Psychological Power Of Being The Best
You ever wonder why certain people always succeed why others work twice as hard and never realize success? The reason will surprise you.
The people who are the best and live without fear become and stay so because they constantly learn from what they do.
‘Wait…Aren’t the people who work hard learning to? What’s the difference?’
Don’t mistake working hard with making progress. You can work hard all day but if you keep doing the wrong thing you’ll never get anywhere. Successful people work hard, but they also constantly learning from what they do. This is hard for people because it requires putting your ego aside and adapting to what you don’t know.
You want to know something crazy…You already have this quality in you! Think about it. You salivate every time you see journals at the bookstore. You know they are waiting to be filled up with ideas and notes. You read and consume webinars, podcasts, or Ted talks every day. You already have all the characteristics of being the best, you just haven’t focused them yet.
How The Best Focus To Get Results
If you want to realize results from your hard work you need to master one quality. You need to learn from what you did and adjust course.
Top performers do this by taking notes on their successes and failures and identifying what gets the best results with the minimum effort.
In short:The best are constantly learning. That’s why we are going to make 2018 the year of learning.
2018 The Year Of Learning
Before we get into 2018 I want to take a second and point something out. I’ve talking with a lot of you. You all share one holdup. You either don’t feel you deserve to succeed or don’t believe you can. Here’s the thing…You deserve all the success you can create!
That doubt you feel is just watered down fear. Just because no one in your family has a college degree doesn’t mean you aren’t meant for success. Success isn’t something you get permission to pursue. You don’t need a degree or training to deserve success. That’s why I love the online world. Online your potential is set by you. Remember online,
Your past in no way defines your potential.
*Didn’t do well in school? Online that doesn’t matter.
*Don’t like showing up to a board room everyday? Online that doesn’t matter.
*Does your community not value you? Online that doesn’t matter.
Online your potential, ability to earn, grow, and develop experience is unlimited.
That’s why I’m going to teach you how to develop the freedom you want running an online business in 2018. When you run an online business your growth is in relation to what you learn.
Online you can build a business that reflects you. Do you not like stodgy suits, boring meetings, and bland products? When you run an online business you don’t have to wear, attend, or sell them!
That’s why I am making 2018 all about learning. You can’t just learn anything and get results. To get real results you have to pick the right things to learn. To pick the right things to learn we need to start by figuring out what you want.
How To Make 2018 Your Biggest Year Yet
To make 2018 your biggest year we are going to do two things.
1:We Will Only Set ‘Horizon’ Goals
Setting big goals is fun but counterproductive. Trust me I get it. Big goals are inspiring. You see yourself crossing the finish line, the hours of labor paying off, it’s thrilling…Then you have to get to work and it’s frustrating.
Getting started on big goals sucks. All you see when you start is everything you have to do. It’s overwhelming. Todd Herman of 90 Day Year has a better idea. He talks about creating ‘Horizon Goals’. These are goals that are just on your horizon but still reachable. Todd promotes 90 day chunks but I’ll make it easier and suggest 6 weeks.
Ask yourself this:
‘What do you want to accomplish in the next six weeks?’
Here are a few of my horizon goals for the next six weeks:
*Lose 8 lbs
*Put $2K in savings into the bank
*Get 2 clients on 4 month retainers
Each goal is small enough to be achievable but not so easy I can reach them naturally. I could set harder goals. I could shoot for losing 25 lbs and saving $4K but doing so would put extra strain on me.
There lies the secret behind how I, along with everyone else, continue to succeed year after year.
The energy I’d spend losing 25 lbs and saving $4K is disproportionate to the enjoyment it would bring me. I continue to succeed and set new goals because I pursue goals that match the level of enjoyment to the energy it would take to accomplish them. Consider this, losing eight pounds will make me feel better about myself. I can do that by working out a little more and eating a little better. Losing twenty-five pounds would take major commitment and the chance of failure is high.
By taking on challenges that require focus but are not overbearing I can keep setting and achieving goals every six weeks.
2:We Will Focus On ‘Next Step’ Goals
You ever take on a physical challenge? I love them and take one every year.
Maybe you did a couch to 5K, a Tough Mudder, or the Chicago Marathon.
Most people achieve their goals because they set unrealistic ones. A great example of this is the Chicago Marathon. When I started the Chicago Marathon I was really excited. I was going to run 26.2 miles! Although it was exciting it was also overwhelming.
If you know me you know I’m a big guy. I’m a rock climber. I’ve got big arms, shoulders, back. I don’t have a runner’s body. So how did I go from rock climber with zero long distance running experience to running the entire Chicago Marathon the first time? Simple.
I focused on ‘Next Step’ goals. I didn’t set out to run a full marathon on the first day (or even a half). Each month I trained to make it to the next step. In six months I went from not being able to run five miles to run the entire marathon! That’s the beauty of next step planning. When you focus on the ‘next step’ you don’t get overwhelmed.
If you want your online business to succeed you need to focus on the ‘Next Step’. If you are just starting your online business your next step might be buying a domain and setting up a site. If you are making a thousand a month your next step might be raising your rates or offering bigger contracts.
If you focus on what you need to do to get the next step you can quickly pick up momentum. That is why I like setting six-week goals.
Six weeks is enough time to help you get to the next step without losing focus. So what next steps can you achieve in the next six weeks? Is it booking more clients, raising your rate, setting up your website, taking a training, etc?
How To Pick The Next Step
Your goal when picking a ‘Next Step’ is to both pick something that will lead you to your larger goal while providing something you can continue to get small wins.
Small wins are key. Positioning yourself to get consistent small wins gives you tiny injections of inspiration. These consistent injections help you stay on task.
How To Properly Set Next Step Goals
To succeed you need to set the right ‘Next Step’ goals. Here are two examples of how to do this.
1:The First $1K Next Step
Let’s say you trying to want to make your first $1K on Upwork.
That means you are in the proposal stage. This is when you are still learning how to write proposals that get you booked. Here’s what I’d suggest. First, read my proposal writing guide (here). Second, schedule time to send 3 proposals a day four days a week.
That isn’t a lot of proposals but it is probably more than you are writing currently.
“Wait…The goal is to make $1K? Why are you focusing on proposals?”
The Secret To Setting Next Step Goals
When coming up with ‘Next Step’ goals you want to focus on a solution that generates results the fastest. If you want to make $1K a month on Upwork (or any job board) that means getting more work. To get more work you have to talk with more clients. To talk with more clients you have to send more proposals.
Remember ‘Next Step’ goals work because they focus on the easiest solution.
2:The Next Step Method To Triple Your Income
Let’s look at a bigger ‘Next Step’ goal. Say you are making $2K a month with your business but want to triple that.
Note:For some of you that seems out of reach. You are struggling to make a couple hundred a month as it is. Don’t worry. By applying the lessons I share in this post you can get started making real money online in six weeks.
To triple your income you’d find the easiest method possible and pursue that. If you are a freelancer that means you want to find clients that need larger projects and ongoing work.
With that in mind, I’d make my ‘Next Step’ goal finding and booking clients who need ongoing work for months at a time. To make this as easy as possible I will focus on pitching retainers. Why? Two reasons.
1:When you pitch a retainer you can package what your price and monthly deliverables will be. This saves you time negotiating and writing out long price proposals every time you talk with a new client.
2:You save time pitching with retainers. Why? Having a retainer means you have niched your service. You only market this service to people who would benefit from it.
2018 is going to be about getting big wins by taking the next step. Here are a few of the ‘Next Steps’ I’ll be taking with this blog and my list:
*I’ll be writing longer guides with detailed information on how to create an online income.

*I’ll dive into rich life psychology you can use to secure the happiness you want
*I’ll be emailing my list much more with in-depth insights into taking action and getting results you want.
If you aren’t on my list already be sure to get in?
